-Administrative duties include creating schedules, organizing didactics, problem-solving, improvement plans, and coordinating residency activities. -Mentoring includes pre-rounding with interns, coaching, and continuous feedback provided to residents.
-The implementation of technology tools to improve resident satisfaction such as shared calendars, QR codes (schedules, forms, surveys, reports, hospital maps), pre-recorded orientations, social media, and more.

-To increase the availability of academic activities, lead the creation of a podcast called “UCONN IM Residency” to produce easily accessible didactics for our residents.
-Our podcast is available on major platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Content is updated at least once a week. We base our topics on the academic activities of the week, particularly our outpatient preclinic conference topics.
-Collaborated with residents and chief medical residents in the creation of podcast series such as the Intern Survival Series, Women in Medicine Take Over, and other ongoing projects.

Role: Website Founder – Administrator
-Created a website with the mission of sharing experiences and information to assist medical students and graduates in pursuing a residency position in the U.S.
-Ecuadoctors.com contains notes, tutorials, posts, and other materials. The website achieved 278.000 hits (visits) from visitors who used search engines such as Google or social media. We received multiple comments and provided support to our followers.
-Created and shared content regarding the U.S. Residency application process and USMLE examinations.
-Established a network of authors and followers, allowing easy access to relevant information and mentorship.

-After finishing medical school and one year of social service, my objective was to practice Internal Medicine in an inpatient setting of a sizeable 400-bed community hospital.
-Improved the process of admitting patients from the emergency department and became part of an interdisciplinary team.
-I took care of patients in a hospital setting, performing medical histories, physical exams, differential diagnoses, and management plans. -Improved my interpersonal and communication skills by interacting with staff members, patients, families, and others.
-Monitored patients during their hospital stay and elaborated discharge plans centered on my patient’s needs. In addition, I coordinated their follow-up with outpatient providers.
-Presented cases during rounds and meetings in which the goal was to identify gaps in medical care and solutions in patient care.

Role: Primary Care Physician. Supervisor: Dr. Janeth Roman
-Social service year mandatory to practice medicine in Ecuador. It consisted of practicing medicine under indirect supervision in an outpatient and emergency setting of an underserved area, emphasizing patient-centered care.
-I provided primary care to patients with multiple medical conditions and needs. As a result, I understood essential determinants of health, including endemic diseases (e.g., parasitosis), lack of basic services (such as drinking water), and low access to care (transportation issues, lack of family support).
-Performed health promotion activities in schools, churches, and health fairs. For example, one of the health fairs helped us understand the shared beliefs and practices of the community by inviting alternative medicine providers such as Shamans.
-We improved transportation issues for disabled and elderly patients for their appointments in coordination with local authorities.

Role: Medical Intern
-An internship year required for graduation as a medical doctor (M.D.) in Ecuador. The goal was to achieve critical patient assessment and management under the supervision of a medical team.
-Responsibilities included direct patient care by taking problem-based medical histories and doing physical exams. In addition, I worked on establishing the differential diagnosis and initial plans on rounds.
-Prescribed medications and ordered complementary tests and procedures, learning how to interpret and use them in our decision-making.
-Oriented medical students during their elective rotations and guided new interns at the beginning of their internship.
-Finally, I developed the article “Small Cell Lung Cancer,” published in the “Revista de la Facultad de Ciencias Medicas de la Universidad de Cuenca” in April 2013.

Position: President. Mentor: Dr. Swarup Kumar
-Created a formal Oncology Student Interest Group achieving official sponsorship by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Elected president of the group by faculty and peers. Participated in multiple activities including meet and greets, tumor boards, and other events with the goal of increasing networking between students, residents, fellows, and faculty with interest in the field.
-The goal of the group is to create a formal space for networking, collaboration, mentorship, and participation in extra-curricular activities in hematology and oncology.

-The committee performs individualized evaluations and monitoring of residents’ improvements.
-In addition, we perform mapping of every resident’s performance based on the ACGME core competencies.
-We use tools such as the direct evaluation of residents by performing mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercises (mini-CEX) in outpatient and inpatient settings to provide real-time feedback and written evaluations.
-We monitor personal issues, burnout, and other essential matters to protect our residents’ wellness.

-Since June 2020, collaborated with the Mujeres Empoderadas (a group of females from the community interested in improving their health) by providing talks, educational materials, and other tools to educate them regarding a healthy lifestyle, health promotion and prevention, nutrition, and other important recommended activities to improve their wellbeing. We met every 1-2 months and chose topics of interest for the group.

Position: Investigator – Apparent Cause Analysis. Supervisor: Dr. Jennifer Baldwin
-Performed an Apparent Cause Analysis (ACA) of a reported safety event in which a patient discharged from the hospital on vancomycin developed acute kidney injury due to an incorrect dosing prescription.
-We investigated multiple root causes, including duplicate orders, discontinuation of the correct order (continuing the wrong medication dose), and lack of follow-up of dosing adjustment in sign-out with an incoming new team for the patient on the discharge day.
-We used this case as an opportunity to improve sign-outs for medication dosing, a multidisciplinary approach to verify the application of recommended adjustments, improve documentation of changes in medication dosing and duration, and daily order review checklists to be performed by teams during rounds.

-Participated in the Clinician Educator Track during my first year of residency at UCONN. The goal was to improve my academic skills including teaching effectively, setting expectations and goals, appraising medical literature, giving and receiving feedback, and learning to lead discussions.
-Engaged in discussions led by Faculty including the theory and practice of teaching medicine, methods for teaching medicine, small group discussions, and others. Improved the understanding of how and when to teach in the hospital and clinic with focused goals and expectations. Improved my approach how to giving and receiving feedback in a non-judgmental and constructive manner. Received mentorship and guidance on how to become an academic professional.

-Improved communication and interpersonal skills by interacting with patients and the medical team.
